Room 606: The SAS House and the Work of Arne Jacobsen
“In the center of Copenhagen, on the sixth floor of the SAS Royal Hotel, a single room preserves a microcosm of the definitive masterwork of Danish architect and furniture designer Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971),” begins the publisher’s description. Completed in 1960, Room 606 is the sole-surviving interior of the SAS House, an unparalleled example of modern architecture and design for which Jacobsen had designed every detail, including the now famous Egg and Swan chairs, fabrics, fixtures and even silverware. Author Michael Sheridan deftly uses the frozen-in-time Room 606 as a lens through which to examine Jacobsen’s entire career. Hundreds of rare archival photographs, original drawings and sketches, and specially commissioned new color photographs bring the glory of the room to life. Sheridan lived in Copenhagen during his youth and later studied architecture at the University of Minnesota and Columbia University. He is a universally recognized authority on Arne Jacobsen.
